Religion follows the rules; relationships follow the heart. Relationships have boundaries that, if crossed, affect the relationship and can even end it. But religion does not have a relationship as it is too caught up in keeping score. And the score does not have balanced weights. Religion keeps score by deducting points for the person caught in sin while adding points to self for good intentions even if it leads to sin.

There are rules for healthy relationships, but rules can't dominate the relationship, or there won't be a relationship. People make marriage vows. But if vows are rehearsed daily to ensure your partner follows them, the marriage will crumble. Wherever we focus, it will be our path. If rules and laws, we draw close to rules and laws even when we can't meet them. If we have a relationship, then we will draw closer to the relationship. But relationships do have boundaries that are not to be crossed. There are relational rules.

A few rules to have a happy relationship with God are as follows: prayer, scripture reading, giving to others as has been given to us, praise and worship, and having ears to hear. Let me list some case studies of rules over relationships that you can investigate later.

Prayer: We have a man praying to himself in the temple, thanking God that he is not like other men. Religious people make long and repetitious prayers, thinking in an abundance of words and self-sacrifice God will hear them. At the end of time, a crowd of preachers will give a list of their sacrifices in the name of Jesus, and Jesus will tell them I don't know you, depart from me. Prayer is not listing our accomplishments before a holy God. It is knowing that we have access to the throne of God through Jesus's sacrifice and not our own.

Is It a Religion or a Relationship?

Walk with God

Adam walked with God in the garden before hiding. Enoch walked with God and was found no more because he was taken. Two men on the way to Emmaus walked with the risen Jesus and didn’t even know until their eyes were opened. And Jesus calls us out to take up our cross and walk with him today. Walk with me, as we walk with Christ.

Scripture

They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. - Genesis 3:8 NASU

Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.  - Genesis 5:24 NASU

While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. - Luke 24:15 NASU

And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. - Luke 9:23-24 NASU

Financial support

Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Galatians 6:6

How do I get saved?

Jesus said if you want to follow me, you must lose your life. A higher standard than the typical ask Jesus into your heart confession. You have to start somewhere, so make the confession, but then do what Jesus said daily if you really believe in him. Jesus continued telling those who want to follow him that they must also take up their cross. Which means following Jesus will put you under the microscope of today's society. But that is part of the plan of losing your life so that you may live for him eternally. And why would you want to follow Jesus with all the trouble that goes with being his disciple? Because he is the only way through death to eternal life. He is not showing us the way. He is the way!

What is 'Walk with me'?

We are living in the Enoch generation. Enoch walked with God and was found no more because God took him. To walk with God means to hear, to reflect, and then to go out into all the world proclaiming Christ crucified. As a Bible teacher, I have several websites that help people walk with God. If you don't have a church home, walk with me until you do. Walk with me is my version of onboarding people into the Kingdom of God. Subscribe to the Walk with me Newsletter to begin.
